About Virupaksha Temple
Virupaksha Temple is the beating heart of Hampi and one of the oldest functioning temples in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva — worshipped here as Virupaksha — this magnificent temple has been in continuous worship for over 1,300 years, surviving the rise and fall of the Vijayanagara Empire around it.
The 50-metre tall gopuram dominates the skyline — its nine tiers covered in sculpted figures visible from kilometres away. Inside, a fascinating camera obscura projects the gopuram's image upside-down on the inner wall through a small pinhole.

History & Significance
The earliest inscriptions date to the 7th century CE, making it one of the oldest temple complexes in peninsular India. When Vijayanagara made Hampi its capital, Virupaksha became the royal temple of the empire. Unlike most Hampi temples destroyed in 1565, Virupaksha survived because of its profound religious significance — making it a living heritage site unlike any other in India.
