A spectacular engineering marvel on the Tungabhadra River — and one of the most magical night views near Hampi, when rainbow-coloured lights transform the dam into a river of living colour.
Standing proudly across the Tungabhadra River near Hosapete, just 13 km from Hampi, the Tungabhadra Dam is one of Karnataka's most important infrastructure projects — and one of its most beautiful tourist attractions. Constructed between 1945 and 1953, the dam stands 49 metres tall with a crest length of over 2 km, impounding a vast reservoir that supports irrigation across thousands of square kilometres of the Deccan Plateau.
But it is not engineering alone that draws visitors from across India. Each evening, the dam's spillways are illuminated with spectacular rainbow-coloured lights — reds, greens, blues, oranges and purples cascading down the water streams and reflecting off the churning river below, creating a mesmerising spectacle unlike anything else in the region.
The Tungabhadra Dam night view is genuinely breathtaking. When the gates are open — particularly during and just after the monsoon season — water rushes through the illuminated spillways in dramatic streams of coloured light. The sound of the rushing water combined with the visual spectacle creates an atmosphere that visitors consistently describe as unlike anything they have experienced.
The Tungabhadra Dam is also worth visiting during the day. The expansive dam gardens (managed by the Karnataka government) are well-maintained and pleasant for a morning walk. The dam's top walkway offers remarkable views across the vast reservoir stretching to the horizon — a landscape utterly different from the rocky ruins of Hampi.
Rock Shiva can arrange a custom Hampi + Tungabhadra Dam evening tour — spend the day exploring Hampi's temples and ruins, then head to the dam in the evening for the colourful night show. It is a perfect full-day itinerary that combines heritage, nature and spectacle.
The dam is only 13 km from Hampi — approximately 30 minutes by tuk-tuk — making it an easy and rewarding add-on to any Hampi trip.
Combine Hampi heritage by day with the rainbow dam night view. Rock Shiva plans it all — just say when.
