Hampi's highest point and most breathtaking sunrise — 275 stone steps to a 360° panorama over ancient ruins, the Tungabhadra River and thousands of ancient boulders at golden hour.
Matanga Hill is the highest point in Hampi and home to what many travellers describe as the best sunrise in all of South India. Rising 120 metres above the surrounding plain, the summit rewards every step with a panoramic view that stretches across the entire Vijayanagara landscape — ancient ruins, temples, the silvery Tungabhadra River, and thousands of dramatic boulders glowing orange in the dawn light.
At the summit sits the Veerabhadra Temple — a small atmospheric Shaiva shrine. According to Hindu mythology, this is where Matanga Rishi performed his meditations, and where the devoted Shabari waited for Lord Rama.
Matanga Hill is the opening experience of Rock Shiva's Day 2 Heritage & Sunrise Tour. He picks you up at 5 AM, waits at the base, then takes you to breakfast and the rest of the heritage day from 10 AM.
In the Ramayana, Matanga Hill is the hermitage of Matanga Rishi, whose curse prevented demon king Vali from entering — making it a sanctuary. It was here that Shabari offered Lord Rama tasted berries as a symbol of pure devotion — one of the Ramayana's most beloved stories. The hill connects mythology, history and nature in a single, unforgettable experience.
